Originally written for a composition competition, Three Movements was influenced by many different
styles of music, from baroque to 20th-century modern. The first movement, Allegro, begins with a crisp fugal section, before
subsiding into a gently lyrical melody. The fugue returns at the end to complete the movement. Adagio the second movement, features
a haunting melody played first by violin, then 'cello. Legato string lines accompany the piano for the central motif, before the initial
theme is heard again. The Presto is fast and fun, with driving chords in the piano, much staccato bowing, and even some humorous
pizzicato for the 'cello!
